Þessi lög kveða á um sjálfstæða eftirlitsstofnun sem hefur eftirlit með starfsemi og starfsháttum lögreglu á Íslandi. Lögin hafa áhrif á alla lögreglumenn og lögreglustofnanir í landinu.
