Þessi lög staðfesta að íslenska sé opinbert tungumál Íslands og setja reglur um notkun þess í opinberri starfsemi. Lögin hafa áhrif á alla íslenska ríkisborgara og opinberar stofnanir sem verða að nota íslensku í opinberri þjónustu.
