Þessi lög kveða á um rétt foreldra til fæðingarorlofs og foreldraorlofs þegar barn fæðist eða er tekið í ættleiðingu, auk réttar til sorgarleyfa við andlát náins aðstandanda. Lögin ná til allra starfsmanna á Íslandi og tryggja þeim tekjur og starfsöryggi á meðan þeir eru í orlofinu.
This law establishes the right of parents to maternity/paternity leave and parental leave when a child is born or adopted, as well as the right to bereavement leave upon the death of a close relative. The law applies to all employees in Iceland and guarantees them income and job security during their leave.
