Þessi lög heimiluðu íslenskum stjórnvöldum að staðfesta tvo samninga við Bretland í kjölfar útgöngu þess úr ESB og EES. Annar samningurinn fjallar um almennt viðskiptasamband og hinn um réttindi borgara beggja ríkja. Á aðlögunartímabilinu, á meðan Bretland skuldbatt sig til að fylgja reglum ESB, skyldi meðhöndla Bretland, breska ríkisborgara og lögaðila með sama hætti og önnur EES-ríki. Lögin tryggðu samfellu í réttindum og skyldum á tímabilinu á milli formlegrar útgöngu Bretlands og gildistöku nýrra samninga.
This law authorized Icelandic authorities to ratify two agreements with the United Kingdom following its exit from the EU and EEA. One agreement covers general trade relations and the other addresses citizens' rights for both countries. During the transition period, while the UK committed to following EU rules, the UK, British citizens, and legal entities were to be treated the same as other EEA states. The law ensured continuity of rights and obligations during the period between the UK's formal exit and the entry into force of new agreements.
