Lögin veita ráðherra heimild til að greiða fjárbætur til þeirra sem sýknaðir voru í Hæstarétti í september 2018 af morðum í Guðmundar- og Geirfinnsmálinu. Bætur greiðast til lifandi sýknuðu og til eftirlifandi maka og barna látinna sakbornings. Fjárhæðin fer eftir lengd frelsissviptingar og bæturnar eru skattfrjálsar, má ekki skuldajafna á móti þeim og hafa ekki áhrif á aðrar bætur eins og almannatryggingar. Heimild ráðherra til greiðslna var tímabundin til 30. júní 2020.
This law authorizes the minister to pay compensation to those acquitted by the Supreme Court in September 2018 in the Guðmundur and Geirfinnur case, one of Iceland's most notorious miscarriages of justice. Compensation is paid to living acquitted persons and to surviving spouses and children of deceased defendants. The amount is based on the length of imprisonment, and the payments are tax-free, cannot be offset against state debts, and do not affect other benefits such as social security. The minister's authority to make these payments was temporary, expiring on June 30, 2020.
