Lögin breyta skilyrðum fyrir íslenskan ríkisborgararétt með því að lengja biðtíma vegna refsinga úr þremur í fjögur ár. Fólk sem sótt hefur um ríkisborgararétt getur nú dvalið lengur erlendis án þess að missa samfelldni í búsetu, til dæmis vegna náms (allt að þrjú ár) eða atvinnu (allt að tvö ár). Einnig er nýtt ákvæði um dvöl erlendis þegar maki eða forsjárforeldri starfar fyrir íslenska ríkið eða alþjóðastofnun. Umsækjendur verða að sanna deili á sér með fullnægjandi hætti og mega ekki hafa notað rangar upplýsingar eða ósannrétt skilríki við dvöl á Íslandi.
This law extends the waiting period after criminal convictions from three to four years for those applying for Icelandic citizenship. Applicants can now spend longer periods abroad without breaking their residence continuity, such as up to three years for studies or up to two years for work or other unavoidable reasons. A new provision allows residence abroad when a spouse or custodial parent who is an Icelandic citizen works for the Icelandic state or international organizations Iceland belongs to. Applicants must properly prove their identity and cannot have used false documents or incorrect information during their stay in Iceland.
