Lögin breyta eldri lögum um hollustuhætti og mengunarvarnir til að innleiða EES-reglur um plastvörur. Helstu breytingar eru að einnota plastvörur verða að bera áberandi merkingar til upplýsingar fyrir neytendur, sett verða töluleg markmið um söfnun og endurvinnslu á veiðarfærum úr plasti og burðarpokum, og kveðið verður á um gerð og samsetningu einnota drykkjaríláta. Lögin ná til allra sem setja plastvörur á markað eða selja þær í atvinnuskyni, og fela í sér bann við oxunarbrjótanlegu plasti.
This law amends existing public health and pollution prevention legislation to implement EEA rules on plastic products. The main changes require single-use plastic products to carry visible labeling for consumers, establish numerical targets for collection and recycling of plastic fishing gear and carrier bags, and regulate the design and composition of single-use beverage containers. The law applies to anyone who places plastic products on the market or sells them commercially, and includes restrictions on oxidation-degradable plastics.
