Lögin breyta reglum um friðlýsingar á náttúrusvæðum til að flýta fyrir ferlunum. Athugasemdafrestur við fyrirhugaðar friðlýsingar styttist úr þremur mánuðum í sex vikur, og Umhverfisstofnun fær auknar heimildir til að taka ákvarðanir sem áður krafðist afskipta ráðherra. Lögin kveða einnig á um að stofna skuli kort yfir óbyggð víðerni landsins fyrir 1. júní 2023, sem á að leiðbeina stjórnvöldum um landnotkun og verndun. Breytingarnar hafa áhrif á Umhverfisstofnun, landvernd og þá sem eiga að gera athugasemdir við friðlýsingaráform.
This law amends the rules for designating protected nature areas to speed up the process. The public comment period for proposed nature protection designations is shortened from three months to six weeks, and the Environment Agency gains expanded authority to make decisions that previously required ministerial involvement. The law also requires the creation of a map of Iceland's wilderness areas by June 1, 2023, which will guide authorities in land use and landscape protection decisions. The changes affect the Environment Agency, conservation processes, and those who wish to comment on protection proposals.
