Lögin stofna Barna- og fjölskyldustofu sem nýja ríkisstofnun sem tekur við verkefnum Barnaverndarstofu frá 1. janúar 2022. Stofnunin hefur það hlutverk að veita og styðja við þjónustu í þágu barna, gefa út leiðbeiningar, þróa gagnreyndar aðferðir, reka heimili og stofnanir fyrir börn, og sinna rannsóknum og upplýsingavinnslu. Stofnunin starfar á grundvelli barnaverndarlaga og annarra laga um félagsþjónustu og þjónustu við fatlað fólk. Lögin heimila stofnuninni að vinna með viðkvæmar persónuupplýsingar og miðla upplýsingum milli þjónustuveitenda þegar það er nauðsynlegt.
The law establishes the Agency for Children and Families as a new government institution that takes over the functions of the Child Protection Agency from January 1, 2022. The agency's role is to provide and support services for children, publish guidelines, develop evidence-based methods, operate residential facilities and institutions for children, and conduct research and information processing. The agency operates under child protection laws and other laws concerning social services and services for people with disabilities. The law authorizes the agency to process sensitive personal information and share information between service providers when necessary.
