Lögin breyta lögreglulögum og skyldum lögum til að styrkja samstarf og samhæfingu í lögreglumálum. Stofnað er lögregluráð þar sem lögreglustjórar sitja saman til að samræma störf sín um allt land. Lögin heimila erlendum lögreglumönnum að starfa hér á landi undir stjórn íslenskra lögreglustjóra og fá lögregluvald. Einnig er lögreglu gert að vinna náið með öðrum stjórnvöldum, heilbrigðisyfirvöldum og félagsmálayfirvöldum, og skipta upplýsingum þegar nauðsyn krefur.
This law amends the Police Act and related legislation to strengthen cooperation and coordination in policing matters. It establishes a Police Council where police chiefs meet to coordinate their work nationwide. The law authorizes foreign police officers to work in Iceland under the supervision of Icelandic police chiefs and grants them police powers. It also requires the police to work closely with other government agencies, health authorities, and social services, and to share information when necessary.
