Lögin flytja yfirstjórn og eftirlit með póstþjónustu frá Póst- og fjarskiptastofnun yfir til Byggðastofnunar. Byggðastofnun tekur við öllum verkefnum sem tengjast póstmálum, þar á meðal eftirliti með póstrekendum, að tryggja samkeppni á markaði og vernda hagsmuni neytenda. Stofnunin á einnig að sjá til þess að allir landsmenn hafi aðgang að grunnpóstþjónustu og að Ísland uppfylli alþjóðlegar skuldbindingar á sviði póstmála. Lögin hafa áhrif á alla póstrekendur og notendur póstþjónustu á Íslandi.
This law transfers the supervision and administration of postal services from the Post and Telecom Administration to the Regional Development Agency (Byggðastofnun). The Regional Development Agency takes over all responsibilities related to postal matters, including supervising postal operators, ensuring market competition, and protecting consumer interests. The agency is also responsible for ensuring all citizens have access to basic postal services and that Iceland fulfills international obligations in postal matters. The law affects all postal operators and postal service users in Iceland.
