Lögin tryggja að fólk sem fær bólusetningu gegn apabólu á árunum 2022–2023 eigi rétt á bótum úr sjúklingatryggingu ef það verður fyrir líkamstjóni vegna bólusetningarinnar. Bótarétturinn tekur til tjóns sem stafar af eiginleikum bóluefnisins sjálfs eða rangri meðhöndlun þess, til dæmis við flutning, geymslu eða bólusetningu. Sjúkratryggingastofnunin ber ábyrgð á að greiða þessar bætur. Lögin voru sett vegna útbreiðslu apabólu á Íslandi og í heiminum og eiga aðeins við um bóluefni sem íslensk heilbrigðisyfirvöld leggja til.
This law ensures that people who receive the monkeypox vaccine in 2022–2023 have the right to compensation from patient insurance if they suffer bodily injury from the vaccination. The right to compensation covers injuries caused by the vaccine's properties or improper handling, such as during transport, storage, or administration. The Social Insurance Administration is responsible for paying these benefits. The law was enacted due to the spread of monkeypox in Iceland and globally, and only applies to vaccines recommended by Icelandic health authorities.
