Lögin gera tvær meginbreytingar á starfsemi safna á Íslandi. Í fyrsta lagi er Safnaráði gert skylt að halda árlegan samráðsfund með ráðherra, fulltrúum höfuðsafnanna og viðeigandi fagfélaga til að auka samvinnu í greininni. Í öðru lagi er skipunartími forstöðumanna Þjóðminjasafns Íslands og Náttúruminjasafns Íslands samræmdur þannig að endurnýja má skipun þeirra einu sinni til næstu fimm ára, í samræmi við reglur fyrir Listasafn Íslands. Lögin hafa áhrif á stjórnendur og starfsfólk höfuðsafnanna þriggja og fela í sér aukna samvinnu og skýrari reglur um skipunartíma.
This law makes two main changes to the operation of museums in Iceland. First, it requires the Museum Council to hold at least one annual consultation meeting with the minister, representatives of the main museums, and relevant professional associations to strengthen collaboration in the sector. Second, it standardizes the appointment terms for directors of the National Museum of Iceland and the Icelandic Institute of Natural History, allowing their appointments to be renewed once for an additional five years, aligning with rules for the National Gallery of Iceland. The law affects managers and staff of the three main museums and creates greater cooperation and clearer rules about appointment terms.
