Lögin stofna Miðstöð menntunar og skólaþjónustu sem þjónustu- og þekkingarstofnun undir ráðherra til að styðja við menntun og skólastarf barna og ungmenna um allt land. Stofnunin sér nemendum í skyldunámi fyrir námsgögnum, þróar aðferðir og úrræði fyrir skóla, og veitir almenna og sérhæfða fræðslu til að samhæfa skólaþjónustu. Miðstöðin á að hafa samvinnu við skóla, sveitarfélög, börn og ungmenni, aðrar stofnanir á sviði velferðar barna, og er heimilt að vinna með persónuupplýsingar nemenda og starfsfólks eftir því sem nauðsynlegt er. Forstjóri er skipaður til fimm ára í senn og má ekki gegna embættinu oftar en tvisvar.
This law establishes the Centre for Education and School Services as a service and knowledge institution under the minister to support education and schooling for children and youth throughout Iceland. The centre provides learning materials to students in compulsory education, develops methods and resources for schools, and offers general and specialized training to coordinate school services. The centre must collaborate with schools, municipalities, children and youth, other child welfare institutions, and is authorized to process personal data of students and staff as necessary. The director is appointed for five-year terms and may not serve more than twice.
