Þessi lög breyta lögum um námsstyrki þannig að nemendur sem hafa hlotið alþjóðlega vernd (flóttafólk) eða dvalarleyfi á grundvelli mannúðarsjónarmiða fá nú sama rétt til námsstyrkja og íslenskir ríkisborgarar. Markmiðið er að jafna fjárhagslegan aðstöðumun þessara nemenda, sérstaklega þar sem margir þeirra búa í sveitarfélögum þar sem langar fjarlægðir eru milli lögheimilis og skóla. Breytingin er hluti af stefnu stjórnvalda um að tryggja farsæla móttöku og inngildingu flóttafólks í íslensku samfélagi.
This law amends the student grant legislation so that students who have received international protection (refugees) or residence permits on humanitarian grounds now have the same right to student grants as Icelandic citizens. The aim is to equalize financial conditions for these students, especially since many of them live in municipalities where distances between home and school are considerable. The amendment is part of the government's policy to ensure successful reception and integration of refugees into Icelandic society.
