Member of the Icelandic Parliament — Viðreisn
Eiríkur Björn Björgvinsson is a member of parliament for the Reform Party in the Southwest Constituency since 2024. He has dedicated his career to public administration and municipal management across Iceland, with particular emphasis on sports and cultural affairs. Over a decades-long career, he served as mayor in three municipalities and as director in two of the country's largest local governments. Before entering parliament, Eiríkur held numerous positions in municipal politics, including as mayor of Austur-Hérað 2002-2004, Fljótsdalshérað 2004-2010, and Akureyri 2010-2018. He later served as director of education and culture in Garðabær 2019-2022 and director of culture and sports in Reykjavík 2023-2024. His background in sports science and education is reflected in his focus on developing sports and recreational programs in the communities he has served. Eiríkur has been active in numerous committees and boards in the fields of municipal governance, civil defense, gender equality, and national park affairs. He served as chairman of the board of the Akureyri Municipal Employees' Pension Fund and sat on the board of the Association of Icelandic Municipalities for eight years. His extensive knowledge of municipal operations and human resource management has shaped him as a politician focused on local governance and community development.
Eiríkur's career in sports and recreation began in 1986 when he worked as a recreation instructor for the Reykjavík Sports and Recreation Council. He worked as a football coach for Fram Football Club 1988-1990 and continued his coaching abroad, first with Frechen 1920 in Germany 1991-1994 and then with the University of South Carolina in the United States in 1994. After returning home, he became youth and sports officer for Egilsstaðir 1994-1996 and then head of the sports and recreation department of Akureyri 1996-2002. In 2002, Eiríkur began a long career as a municipal mayor when he was appointed to that position in Austur-Hérað, where he served until 2004. He continued as mayor of Fljótsdalshérað 2004-2010 and then Akureyri 2010-2018, where he led the municipality's development for a decade. During these years, he was at the forefront of infrastructure and service development in the country's largest municipalities outside the capital region. After his career as mayor, Eiríkur returned to management positions in education and culture. He served as director of education and culture in Garðabær 2019-2022 and then took the position of director of culture and sports in the City of Reykjavík 2023-2024, before taking a seat in parliament in 2024 as a representative of the Reform Party in the Southwest Constituency.
