Ólafur Adolfsson is a member of parliament for the Independence Party representing the Northwest Constituency since 2024. He is a trained pharmacist who has worked in the pharmaceutical sector for approximately three decades, both as a chief pharmacist, pharmacy owner, and in private pharmaceutical sales. Ólafur has been prominent in business and politics in Western Iceland, particularly in Akranes where he served as a town councilor for eight years and chaired the town council for a period. Before taking his seat in parliament, Ólafur had built extensive experience in local government and economic development. He served on the planning and environment council of Akranes and was chairman of the Western Iceland health committee for most of his tenure. Ólafur has also held board positions in various associations and companies related to infrastructure development and economic growth in the region, including Faxaflóahafnir and the Grundartangi Development Association, which he has chaired since 2017. With his background in pharmacy, business, and local politics, Ólafur Adolfsson brings experience relevant to regional issues and the healthcare system. He is married to Margrét Birgisdóttir, a pharmacist, and has two adult children from his first marriage and two stepchildren from his current marriage.
Ólafur Adolfsson's career has primarily been in the pharmaceutical sector. Immediately after completing his studies in 1993, he worked as a teacher at the agricultural sciences department of the Agricultural University of Iceland at Hvanneyri for one year. He then took on the position of chief pharmacist at Akranesapótek in 1995 and held a similar position at Sauðárkróksapótek from 1997 to 1998. From 1999 to 2001, Ólafur worked as a pharmacy owner at Apótekið Iðufjöll before changing his professional focus and joining the international pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, where he worked first as a sales representative and later as a sales manager from 2001 to 2006. In 2006, Ólafur started his own pharmaceutical sales business which he has operated since. Alongside his work in the pharmaceutical sector, he has been active in business and local politics in Western Iceland. He served on a task force on economic affairs for the municipality of Akranes from 2011 to 2014 and was elected as a town councilor in Akranes in 2014, a position he held until 2022. During this time, he chaired the town council of Akranes from 2014 to 2018 and served on the planning and environment council from 2018 to 2022. Ólafur has extensive experience in board positions in associations and companies related to infrastructure development and economic growth. He served on the Western Iceland health committee from 2012 to 2016 and again from 2018 to 2020, serving as chairman for most of that period. He has been on the board of Faxaflóahafnir during the periods 2014 to 2017 and 2018 to 2022, and on the board of the Grundartangi Development Association since 2016 where he has served as chairman since 2017. He has also been on the board of Háhiti since 2012.
