Þessi þingsályktunartillaga biður Alþingi um heimild til að staðfesta nýjar reglur frá Evrópusamtökunum um eftirlits með matvælum, dýrum og plöntum. Tillagan var lögð fram vegna þess að Ísland er part í EES-samningnum og þarf að fylgja nýjum evrópskum reglum um eldifngga og heilbrigði dýra. Ef tillagan gengur í gegn myndu margar gömul og úrelt reglur um matvælaeftirlit hér á landi falla úr gildi og vera skipt út fyrir nýjar, einföldari reglur sem eru í beinum tengslum við evrópskar kröfur. Breytingarnar snerta aðallega hvernig eftirlitsaðilar hér á landi framkvæma athuganir á matvælum, plöntum og dýrum.
