This parliamentary resolution proposes asking the foreign minister to conduct a survey about what people in Germany, France, Britain, Canada, and the United States think about Iceland's whaling. The resolution was put forward because the government approved continued whaling without knowing whether it might damage Iceland's international image or discourage tourists and customers from these countries. Tourism is now Iceland's largest export industry, generating 42% of the nation's foreign income, but it depends heavily on a positive image of Iceland. If passed, the government would get better information about whether whaling could harm tourism and sales of Icelandic products abroad, allowing them to make more informed decisions about the future of whaling.
