Þessi þingsályktunartillaga leggur til að kolefnisgjald í Íslandi hækki eða lækki ár hvert eftir því hvernig okkur gengur að minnka kolefnislosun okkar. Tillagan var lögð fram vegna þess að loftslagsbreytingar eru stærsta ógn sem við stöndum frammi fyrir og við þurfum sterkari hvata til að draga úr losun. Ef tillagan nær fram að ganga myndu fyrirtæki og aðilar sem losa mikið þurfa að greiða meira gjald ef við dragast ekki nægilega úr losun okkar, en myndu greiða minna ef okkur gengur vel. Með þessum hætti væru þeir sem losa mest beittir beinum þrýstingi til að bæta sig og nota hreinni aðferðir.
This parliamentary resolution proposes that Iceland's carbon tax increase or decrease each year based on how well we reduce our carbon emissions. The proposal was put forward because climate change is the greatest threat facing humanity and we need stronger incentives to cut emissions. If the resolution passes, companies and entities that emit the most would pay higher taxes if we fail to reduce emissions sufficiently, but would pay less if we succeed. This way, the biggest polluters would face direct financial pressure to improve their practices and use cleaner methods.
