Þessi þingsályktunartillaga fjallar um samning Sameinuðu þjóðanna um réttindi fatlaðs fólks og bíður ríkisstjórnina að fullgilda og setja hann í gildi. Ísland undirritaði þennan samning árið 2007 en hefur ekki enn gert hann að lögum. Tillagan er lögð fram vegna þess að margt fatlað fólk og talsmenn þeirra hafa beðið um að samningurinn verði lögfestur, svo að réttindi þess séu betur vernduð og Ísland skuldi fylgja fyrri lofordum um að gera þetta. Ef tillagan nær fram að ganga myndu íslensk lög breytast til að falla í samræmi við samninginn og fatlað fólk væru með betri réttarvernd og neitunarheimild við dómstóla ef réttindi þeirra væru brotin.
This parliamentary resolution calls on the government to formally ratify and enact the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into Icelandic law. Iceland signed this convention in 2007 but has not yet made it binding domestic law. The resolution is being proposed because disabled people and their advocates have repeatedly requested that the convention be enacted to better protect their rights, and previous governments promised to do this but failed to follow through. If passed, it would require Iceland to change its laws to align with the convention and give disabled people stronger legal protections and the ability to sue in court if their rights are violated.
