Þessi þingsályktunartillaga felur í sér að Alþingi befali ríkisstjórninni að draga opinberlega til baka umsókn Íslands um aðild að Evrópusambandinu. Tillagan var lögð fram vegna þess að ótilhlýðileg óvissa ríkir um stöðu íslenska umsóknarinnar – árið 2015 sendi ríkisstjórn bréf um að Ísland væri ekki lengur umsóknarríki, en Evrópusambandið taldi þetta ekki jafngilt afturköllun og umsóknin gildir enn formlega. Ef tillagan nær fram að ganga myndi Ísland gera það opinberlega ljóst fyrir Evrópusambandinu að það vill ekki lengur aðild, og myndu endalaust deilur um stöðu umsóknarinnar leysast. Þetta væru endanleg breyting frá því ástandi sem hefur staðið í rúm áratug, þar sem Ísland hefur ekki þurft að taka formlega afstöðu til málsins.
This parliamentary resolution proposes that Parliament instruct the government to formally withdraw Iceland's application for European Union membership. The resolution was put forward because unclear confusion exists about the status of Iceland's application – in 2015 the government sent a letter stating Iceland was no longer an applicant country, but the EU did not consider this equivalent to withdrawal and the application remains technically valid. If passed, Iceland would make it officially clear to the EU that it no longer seeks membership, and would resolve the decade-long uncertainty about the application's status.
