Þessi þingsályktunartillaga leggur til að banna fiskeldi í opnum sjókvíum á Íslandi. Tillagan var lögð fram vegna þess að rannsóknir og skýrslur hafa sýnt að fiskeldi í opnum sjókvíum veldur miklum og varanlegum skemmdum á náttúru landsins, til dæmis að sleppifiskar blandast villtu laxastofni og eyðileggja hann. Ef tillagan nær fram að ganga myndu engin ný fiskeldi í opnum sjókvíum mega stofnuð verða og núverandi starfsemi myndi hætt. Jafnframt myndu stjórnvöld styrkja aðrar atvinnutækifæri í byggðum sem treysta á fiskeldi, til að fólki henni ekki erfiðir tíðir.
This parliamentary resolution proposes banning fish farming in open sea cages in Iceland. The resolution was put forward because research and reports have shown that open sea cage farming causes severe and lasting damage to Iceland's nature, such as escaped farmed fish interbreeding with and destroying wild salmon populations. If the resolution passes, no new open sea cage fish farms would be allowed and existing operations would be shut down. At the same time, the government would support other business opportunities in communities that depend on fish farming, so that people are not left in difficult circumstances.
