Þessi þingsályktunartillaga leggur til að friðlýsa lóðina við Stjórnarráðshúsið og nærumhverfið við það. Það þýðir að ekki væru heimil nokkur ný byggingarverk í næsta nágrenni húsanna sem gætu skemmt útliti þess eða kastað skugga á það. Tillagan var lögð fram vegna þess að Stjórnarráðshúsið er gömult og dýrðlegt steinhús frá 18. öld sem tilheyrir mikilvægustu menningarminjum Íslands og á að vernda það fyrir komandi kynslóðir. Ef tillagan nærist fram myndu allar áætlanir um stækkun Stjórnarráðshússins verða ótilgengilegar. Í staðinn væru þörfin á fleiri skrifstofum fyrir stjórnarráðuneytið leyst með öðrum leiðum, til dæmis með því að nota önnur eldri byggingarhúsnæði eða reisa ný byggingu á öðrum stað.
This parliamentary resolution proposes to protect the Government House and the area surrounding it so that no new buildings can be constructed nearby that might damage or cast a shadow over the historic structure. The proposal was put forward because the Government House is an old and precious stone building from the 18th century that belongs among Iceland's most important cultural heritage sites and deserves protection for future generations. If passed, any plans to expand the Government House would become impossible. Instead, the government would need to find alternative office space for the ministry in other ways, such as using other historic buildings or constructing new facilities elsewhere in the city.
