Þessi þingsályktunartillaga leggur til að fólk sem borgar útvarpsgjaldir fái að velja sjálf hvert hluta þess gjaldsins fer, og geti sent allt að þriðjungi þess til annarra fjölmiðla en Ríkisútvarps. Tillagan er borin fram vegna þess að flutningsmenn hennar telja að Ríkisútvarpið hafi of mikinn kraft vegna þess að það fær allan gjaldstofninn einn og sér, og það sé ekki heilbrigt fyrir fjölbreytni og sjálfstæði fjölmiðla á Íslandi. Ef tillagan nær fram myndi fólkið geta stutt aðra miðla með sínum framlögum og búið til sterkari samkeppni á fjölmiðlamarkaðnum. Með þessu væru aðrir fjölmiðlar við betra forspor til að gefa Ríkisútvarpinu aðhald og bjóða íslensku þjóðinni meiri val og fjölbreytni.
This parliamentary resolution proposes that people who pay broadcasting fees should be allowed to choose where some of that money goes, directing up to one-third of it to media outlets other than Iceland's public broadcaster (RÚV). The proposal was put forward because supporters believe that RÚV has too much power since it receives the entire broadcasting fee revenue alone, which is unhealthy for media diversity and independence in Iceland. If passed, people could use their contributions to support other media outlets and create stronger competition in the media market. This would put other media in a better position to hold RÚV accountable and give Icelanders more choice and diversity in their news and information sources.
