Þessi þingsályktunartillaga felur í sér að ríkisstjórnin fullgildi og setji í lög viðbótarsamning Sameinuðu þjóðanna um réttindi fatlaðs fólks. Tillagan var lögð fram vegna þess að Ísland gerði þennan samning undirskrift fyrir löngu árið 2007, en hefur ekki enn staðfest hann formlega eða gert hann að íslenskum lögum. Margir málaflokkir, þar með talið réttindasamtök fatlaðs fólks, hafa stutt þessa tillögu og óskað eftir því að hún gangi til framkvæmda. Ef tillagan nær fram að ganga myndu fatlaðir einstaklingar fá betri vernd gegn mismunun og myndu geta höfðað kærur ef réttindi þeirra verða brotin. Ríkisstjórnin ætti að ljúka þessu fyrir árslok 2025 og gera samninginn að hluta af íslenskum lögum.
This parliamentary resolution proposes that the government ratify and enact an optional protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The resolution was put forward because Iceland signed this agreement back in 2007 but has not yet formally approved it or made it Icelandic law. Several organizations, including disability rights groups, have supported this resolution and called for it to be implemented. If the resolution passes, people with disabilities would gain better protection against discrimination and could file complaints if their rights are violated. The government is expected to complete this process by the end of 2025 and incorporate the agreement into Icelandic law.
