This parliamentary resolution addresses the definition of net fisheries, which are the waters that belong to coastal landowners. The resolution was put forward because there is confusion about exactly where these fishing zones end and public waters begin, since old laws from Jónsbók say one thing while older fishing regulations from 1849 say something else. The resolution asks the Minister of Industries to investigate whether the old rules about net fisheries from Jónsbók should be brought back into modern law to make everything clearer and simpler. If passed, Icelandic law would contain a better and more precise definition of where land ownership extends into the sea, which would help prevent disputes over fishing rights.
